The Milano Smistamento terminal, currently under construction in Segrate, will span roughly 240,000 square meters and is set to feature advanced technological equipment to maintain high standards of safety and efficiency. The terminal's development is budgeted at around 115 million euros, supported by Swiss Government funding, with phased operations anticipated to begin in 2026. At full capacity, the terminal is expected to handle 22 trains daily and manage approximately 395,000 ITUs (Intermodal Transport Units) annually.
TerAlp's initiative is part of a broader strategy to develop modern intermodal terminals across economically critical regions. This project underscores a commitment to reducing environmental impact while meeting evolving transport needs. With Milan and Brescia as starting points, these terminals aim to streamline traffic flow through Switzerland, particularly with the new railway tunnels of San Gottardo and Monte Ceneri.
As part of the FS Group's Logistics Hub, TerAlp, Mercitalia Logistics, and their partners are investing over 350 million euros in terminal development. This latest contract is a key element in their ongoing investment plan, reinforcing connections with the European Ten-T network and supporting local economies through better logistics infrastructure.
