A dedicated railway testing site in Tuas, Singapore, has commenced full operations following a two-phase construction process that began in 2021.

The Singapore Rail Test Centre (SRTC), developed by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), spans around 50 hectares and is designed to accommodate testing of various rail technologies and systems outside the operational network.

Three separate tracks for multi-purpose testing

The facility now includes three separate test tracks, each intended for specific types of trials. The High-Speed Test Track, delivered in the first phase by November 2023, runs 2.8 km in a straight alignment with minimal curvature and gradients. This enables trains to reach and maintain speeds of up to 100 km/h for traction and braking assessments. Circle Line trains have been undergoing commissioning on this track since late 2023.

Phase two has added a Performance and Integration Test Track and an Endurance Test Track. The former, also 2.8 km long, includes a branched S-track layout for integrated system validation. The latter extends 3 km in a looped formation with uphill sections designed for Train Mileage Accumulation Tests. This layout is intended for examining long-term reliability and durability under extended use scenarios.

Facility infrastructure and system compatibility

Besides the tracks, the facility comprises a three-storey operations and maintenance building. It includes an Operations Control Centre, administrative offices, workshops, inspection bays, and zones designated for mid-life train upgrades. The tracks are configured to handle different power supply systems — both third-rail and overhead conductor rails — and can accommodate multiple signalling and communication technologies used across the MRT network.

The SRTC enables parallel testing of trains and core systems without the need to allocate time slots on the operational network. Testing can continue around the clock, and systems such as signalling, communications, and supervisory controls can be evaluated under isolated conditions.

Use beyond vehicle testing

The centre also provides a controlled environment for trials of new railway technologies and systems by manufacturers, operators, and research teams. In addition to testing hardware, the facility is intended to support the local workforce in developing maintenance and operational skills by offering hands-on interaction with systems in a non-passenger environment.

Environmental measures included

The site has received Green Mark Platinum Certification by Singapore’s Building and Construction Authority. Sustainability features incorporated into its design include solar photovoltaic panels, a hybrid cooling system, and smart lighting control. Infrastructure supporting active mobility, such as bicycle parking and sheltered walkways, has also been integrated.

The SRTC is located on the site of the former Raffles Country Club and has been officially opened as of 28 March 2025.
