Union Pacific is in the process of constructing a new intermodal terminal in Kansas City, Missouri, on its existing property located west of downtown. The facility, named Kansas City Intermodal Terminal (KCIT), is being developed to serve the growing demand for both domestic and international containerized shipments, handling a variety of goods including grains, consumer products, refrigerated items, and pet food.
The terminal, part of Union Pacific’s intermodal network, will offer expanded capacity compared to its current Kansas City operations, aiming to provide a strategic location to cater to businesses in Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri, and other surrounding regions. It will also serve as a key point of access to the company’s broader 23-state network, including connections to ports on the West Coast and Gulf of Mexico.
KCIT is equipped with the company’s PGT gating system, which utilizes scanning technology to streamline the process for truck drivers entering and exiting the facility, potentially reducing turnaround times. The construction of the terminal is seen as part of Union Pacific’s effort to shift more freight traffic from road to rail, offering benefits related to congestion and emissions reduction.
