At Maker Faire Rome 2025, Italy’s FS Group outlined a technology investment programme of €20 billion through 2034, focusing on network digitalisation, energy sourcing, and fleet upgrades. The plan includes extending ERTMS to the entire Core Extended network by 2040.
FS said the funding will support large-scale digitalisation across a network handling about 10,000 trains daily and more than 570 million passengers annually. The group also highlighted decarbonisation measures, including the creation of FS Energy to develop photovoltaic capacity and procure electricity via power-purchase agreements for self-consumption.
On the railway side, the company targets full ERTMS coverage on the Core Extended network by 2040 to improve reliability, traffic management, and life-cycle costs. Related vehicle work includes technology upgrades for 382 Trenitalia trainsets and 60 FS Logistix locomotives, aiming to align onboard systems with ERTMS deployment and support more predictive operations.
