Alpha Trains and Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems division have signed a letter of intent outlining plans for up to 1,000 overhauls of mtu drive systems used in Alpha Trains’ fleet of diesel multiple units (DMUs).
The overhaul will involve the renewal of mtu PowerPacks installed in Alpha Trains’ DMUs, which include the Talent, Desiro, and Coradia Lint series. These PowerPacks, essential for the propulsion and auxiliary systems of the trains, are set to undergo a remanufacturing process. The scope includes disassembly, cleaning, testing, and refurbishment, incorporating either remanufactured components or new parts. This approach aims to ensure that the drive systems remain operational for an additional 18,000 hours.
Both companies are also working to align the overhaul processes with Alpha Trains’ operational requirements, while addressing potential component obsolescence issues. Rolls-Royce is also reviewing compliance with EU maintenance certification ECM 2 and 4 as part of the long-term plan.
Alpha Trains currently operates 173 DMUs, powered by 369 mtu PowerPacks from Rolls-Royce, including models from the VT 643, VT 642, VT 648, and VT 622 series. The remanufacturing process is designed to not only extend the lifespan of these units but also reduce the consumption of raw materials and energy, supporting a more sustainable operational lifecycle.
