CargoBeamer has launched a new intermodal rail connection between Liège in Belgium and Domodossola in northern Italy. The route strengthens transalpine rail capacity at a time of structural change in Alpine freight flows.

CargoBeamer has opened a new intermodal rail service linking Liège and Domodossola, with operations starting last week. The connection marks the company’s entry into the Belgian market and expands its transalpine portfolio following the discontinuation of the Rolling Highway service between Germany and Italy in late 2025.

The Liège–Domodossola route is currently operating three weekly round trips, with plans to increase frequency to six weekly services by the second quarter of 2026. At the same time, the service is expected to be extended further into northern Italy. The route accommodates a wide range of loading units, including craneable and non-craneable semi-trailers, refrigerated and ADR units, tank trailers, containers, swap bodies and specialised equipment. Rail traction is provided by BLS Cargo, with terminal operations handled at the Liège Logistics Intermodal Terminal and the DB Cargo Transa / FLS Terminal in Domodossola.

The launch comes as the intermodal sector adjusts to reduced capacity for non-craneable trailers crossing the Alps following the end of accompanied rolling motorway services. CargoBeamer positions the new route as a non-accompanied, scalable alternative on the Rhine–Mediterranean corridor. With Liège–Domodossola added to its network, the operator now runs three transalpine connections and more than 50 weekly trains across the Alpine region. According to the company, each shipment moved on the new service can reduce CO₂ emissions by around 86% compared with diesel road transport.
