Forwardis inaugurates innovative rail solutions for Ukrainian grain transport

At Forwardis, we are committed to offering innovative logistics solutions tailored to the changing needs of our customers.

One of our latest partnerships underlines this: a company specialising in the storage, trading and production of grain in Ukraine, in cooperation with local cooperatives. This company has a strategic warehouse at the junction of the Hungarian, Slovakian and Ukrainian borders, at the CHOP railway station.

The war in Ukraine has had a profound effect on Ukrainian grain logistics. Traditionally, this grain was transported by sea, via the Black Sea, which allowed the loading of very large ships capable of carrying between 15,000 and 20,000 tonnes of goods. However, due to the ongoing conflict and naval blockade, river transport has become too dangerous. Faced with these challenges, many customers have had to review their logistics strategies and explore safer, more efficient alternatives... rail!

To meet these new needs, our customer decided to lease wagons and purchase traction services from us. They chose to lease two trainsets of grain wagons and we set up heavy trains to various European countries. Our trains, consisting of 28 to 30 wagons for Italy and up to 33 wagons for Germany, provide reliable and safe transport of Ukrainian grain.

We started these new services in November 2023, with regular departures from CHOP station to various destinations in Europe. Our main routes include Bremen and Krefeld in Germany and San Martino di Lupari in Italy.

At Forwardis, we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt our logistics solutions to current market demands and geopolitical challenges. By working closely with our partners in Ukraine, we continue to ensure the safe and efficient movement of goods, contributing to the resilience of the European supply chain.
