The agreement maintains Lineas’ current traction capacity for international rail freight and includes an option to draw on additional or different locomotive types in the future.

Lineas and RAILPOOL have extended their cooperation for another six years, securing continued access to 33 electric locomotives from the RAILPOOL fleet.

The extension supports Lineas’ operations across several European corridors, where the company aims to keep service planning flexible in response to fluctuating logistics demand. RAILPOOL supplies the locomotives with full-service maintenance, a setup the two companies have applied for several years.

RAILPOOL currently operates more than 450 locomotives across Europe, with a wider fleet of over 600 electric and hybrid locomotives including those on order. The company services its traction assets through six workshops and a spare parts hub with several thousand components. Its locomotives cover around 85 million km per year.

Lineas sees the renewed contract as part of its wider shift of freight from road to rail. The continued availability of electric traction is tied to efforts to reduce emissions per tonne-kilometre compared with road haulage. Both partners note that they are working with technologies such as hybrid systems, alternative fuels, and energy-efficiency measures as part of longer-term fleet planning.
