The European Union Agency for Railways (ERA) and Germany’s Federal Railway Authority (Eisenbahn-Bundesamt, EBA) have approved the Talgo 230 train for operation in Germany and Denmark.

The approval covers Deutsche Bahn’s ICE L fleet and Danske Statsbaner’s EuroCity units.

The authorisation applies to trains ordered under contracts signed in 2019 and 2020. DB’s agreement covers 23 trainsets, with the option for up to 100 under a framework arrangement. DSB’s order began with eight trainsets and was later expanded to 16. All units have been developed and manufactured in Spain.

The Talgo 230 platform is designed for speeds up to 230 km/h and features modular configurations ranging from 9 to 21 cars. The trains can be coupled with different locomotive types and are intended for cross-border services. Initial operation will involve third-party locomotives, with Talgo-built Class 105 units to be introduced following their own homologation process.

Additional certifications are planned for Austria, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. The authorisation process, carried out with TÜV SÜD Rail, included static tests in Spain and almost two years of dynamic, braking, aerodynamics, and electromagnetic compatibility trials in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and the Netherlands.

In May 2025, Talgo signed a contract with Flix worth approximately €2.4 billion to supply up to 65 high-speed trains based on the Talgo 230 platform. The firm order covers 30 units valued at around €1.06 billion, intended for use in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden.
