ERFA: Infrastructure Managers Must Coordinate Alternative Capacities

European Rail Freight Association (ERFA) calls for better coordination of infrastructure works, considering capacities across the border of the neighbouring state.

In a recently held event, ERFA noted the struggles resulting from extensive infrastructure works and upgrades ongoing across the European Union. On the one hand, upgraded infrastructure is needed to achieve the targets for the modal shift to rail. On the other hand, a balance is needed for the infrastructure works management to keep the current capacities necessary for rail freight.

Because over 50% of all freight traffic on rails crosses at least one border, ERFA urges for coordination of infrastructure works between the neighbouring rail infra managers. ERFA says that the discussion must shift from works coordination only to agreements of coordination of alternative capacity. To do this, considering the route capacity of neighbouring member states is critical, as well as sufficient route knowledge for train drivers.
