How Rail Cargo Group integrates non-cranable semi-trailers into combined transport

The initiative targets the large share of semi-trailers on European roads, the majority of which are not designed for vertical handling.

ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) has introduced a trio of systems – r2L, ISU and ROLA – that enable the transport of non-cranable trailers and full trucks in intermodal traffic.

The r2L (roadrailLink) system allows non-cranable trailers to be lifted onto standard intermodal wagons using a special platform that is craned together with the trailer. RCG is now a certified network partner for this technology, joining a group of operators, terminals and railway companies offering the service. The process requires no ramps and can be completed in five minutes. r2L is currently in use between Germany, the Benelux region and Romania.

The ISU (Innovative Semitrailer Handling Unit) offers another solution, particularly on the TransFER Wels–Trieste route. In this system, trailers are driven onto a lifting device using a ramp. Once uncoupled, wheel grippers lift the trailer onto a pocket wagon. RCG has been using ISU on this corridor for over a decade, operating six round trips per week. The service forms part of a trimodal logistics chain linking Europe and Turkey via road, RoRo ferry and rail.

ROLA (Rolling Road) is the third option, transporting entire trucks on low-floor wagons. Drivers accompany their vehicles in onboard coaches. This service primarily aims to reduce heavy road traffic on key transit routes.

All three systems function with standard vehicles and require no modifications or special adaptations. This enables road hauliers to access intermodal transport without investing in cranable trailers or additional infrastructure. Benefits include exemptions from road tolls, higher payload capacity, and access to certain driving ban exemptions and incentives.
