A new high-speed parcel transport service between Paris and Lyon is now operational, moving Amazon packages aboard TGV passenger trains.

The connection, managed by Hexafret—a rail company within the Rail Logistics Europe (RLE) group—utilizes existing high-speed passenger services to carry freight over a 470 km corridor in just 2 hours and 18 minutes.

Over half a million parcels annually

The service follows a trial phase and is now fully commercial, with a reported capacity exceeding 500,000 parcels per year. Parcels are loaded into enclosed compartments integrated into the TGV's cargo holds. The operation serves Amazon’s logistics infrastructure in both Paris and Lyon, integrating rail freight into last-mile delivery networks.

Two-thirds of final deliveries in Paris are reportedly completed using low-emission methods such as electric vehicles, cargo bikes, or on foot.

Reduction in emissions on a key corridor

By substituting road freight with high-speed rail, the initiative contributes to lower emissions. According to the figures shared, emissions per kilometre on rail are ten times lower than those produced by trucks on the same route. This effort aligns with broader industry aims to reduce road congestion and carbon output on frequently used transport corridors.

The Paris–Lyon axis is one of France's busiest transport routes, and the integration of rail for parcel logistics may influence similar models elsewhere. Hexafret operates the trains under RLE coordination, reaching speeds of up to 320 km/h.

Beyond the Paris–Lyon corridor, Amazon also uses rail routes including Le Boulou–Bettembourg and Boulou–Calais, operated by RLE’s subsidiary VIIA. These routes further integrate rail freight into long-haul logistics operations across France and toward neighbouring countries.

The use of high-speed passenger trains for freight purposes remains a niche segment within the logistics sector but may attract increased interest from shippers seeking lower-emission options across densely trafficked routes. The infrastructure adaptation—dedicated and enclosed space within the TGV—suggests a flexible model for combining passenger services with parcel transport.
