The first unit from the batch of 23 short-distance electric multiple units (RE-R) ordered from Pesa Bydgoszcz for Romania has reached the stage of preliminary inspection.
During the visit, ARF officials reviewed several elements of the assembly process for the first RE-R trainset, designated RE-R1. The inspection included a visual check of completed bogie frames, chassis-mounted equipment, passenger seat installation, and door assemblies. The supplier confirmed that all passenger seats required for the first unit had been delivered and were ready for installation.
The visit focused on assessing assembly status before the vehicle is dispatched to Romania for certification, approval, and commissioning. According to the current schedule, the first EMU is expected to arrive in Romania by the end of May 2025.
The 23 units under Lot 2 are part of a broader procurement contract for 62 regional EMUs initiated by ARF. These trains are intended for short-distance passenger operations on Romania’s electrified lines.
The total project value stands at approximately EUR 561.3 million. The financing structure includes EUR 470.2 million from the EU’s Modernisation Fund and a national co-financing contribution of EUR 91 million. Most of the domestic contribution covers VAT obligations.
Following delivery of the first unit, the EMUs will undergo regulatory certification and market authorisation processes in Romania before entering passenger service. Further details regarding technical specifications, capacity, or deployment plans have not been disclosed. The remainder of the fleet will be delivered gradually under the same supply contract.
