Winvic will oversee the first phase of the £1 billion WMI Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) - set to become the UK's largest intermodal logistics site by 2034.

Winvic has been awarded the contract to deliver the first phase of the ambitious West Midlands Interchange (WMI) project. Winvic will now play a pivotal role in delivering the first phase of the WMI Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) - an impressive project set to become the UK's largest intermodal logistics site by 2034, with 8 million sq ft of commercial space across its sprawling 734-acre site.

Scheduled to commence in 2023, Winvic Construction Ltd will oversee the initial phase of the project, encompassing the development of new road infrastructure, enhancements to the existing road and public rights of way network, undergrounding of energy infrastructure, and earthworks required for the creation of development plots and landscape zones.

Rob Cook, Director of Civils and Infrastructure at Winvic stated: “Having worked as the design stage partner on the West Midlands Interchange during Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) for over twelve months, Winvic is well-positioned to deliver the first phase civils and infrastructure works. Our established collaborative approach, successful track record in delivering similar intermodal logistics schemes, sustainable projects, and commitment to fostering employment and training opportunities for local communities align perfectly with this best-in-class logistics park and SRFI.”

The West Midlands Interchange project, which received planning permission in May 2020, is being financed and delivered by Oxford Properties, the real estate arm of Canadian pension fund OMERS, in partnership with European developer LCP.

In addition to its economic potential to attract global business and investment, the WMI is expected to create over 8,500 new jobs and apprenticeships during its development, construction, and operational phases, significantly contributing to employment and training opportunities in the Midlands region.
