Siemens Mobility has secured a long-term infrastructure and maintenance framework contract with Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) covering the nationwide deployment of its Trackguard Westlock computer-based interlocking (CBI) system.
The project involves replacing legacy signalling infrastructure introduced in the 1980s with the Westlock platform, which will be installed as part of the National Train Control Centre in Dublin. The rollout will begin in the capital and expand progressively across Ireland’s railway network.
The Westlock system operates by digitally managing route setting, points, and signalling data across multiple control areas. It is designed to support train operations by coordinating safe movements across the network, aiming to increase capacity utilisation without physical expansion of track assets.
The agreement includes long-term maintenance and technical support for the installed systems. Siemens will oversee the transition to computer-based interlockings across passenger and freight corridors, working jointly with Iarnród Éireann’s infrastructure teams throughout the process.
This contract aligns with objectives outlined in Project Ireland 2040 and the All-Island Strategic Rail Review. The scope of the framework includes the replacement of existing mechanical and relay-based interlockings with CBI installations, supporting efforts to unify and modernise Ireland’s national rail control infrastructure.
