Construction of a second rail terminal at London Gateway is scheduled to begin in May 2025, following approval of DP World’s EUR 1.2 billion expansion project.
The second terminal will be built alongside two additional all-electric deep-water berths, expanding the port’s ability to handle multiple ultra-large container vessels simultaneously. Once operational, the new rail infrastructure is expected to support more frequent services and longer trains, providing additional routing options to inland terminals and logistics hubs across the UK.
The expansion follows regulatory clearance obtained through coordination with Thurrock Council and the Marine Management Organisation. London Gateway is part of the Thames Freeport and already hosts regular intermodal services. The second terminal is aimed at improving operational resilience and throughput flexibility on key domestic corridors.
DP World expects the wider construction project to create more than 1,000 temporary jobs, with 400 permanent positions at the logistics hub once completed. The company operates container terminals in both London Gateway and Southampton.
