The flows add to RheinCargo’s bulk materials portfolio serving steel and heavy industry customers in the Rhine-Ruhr region.

RheinCargo has begun transporting lime for thyssenkrupp Steel at the start of 2026, moving around 75,000 tonnes per year from Kerkerbach to Duisburg-Nord, according to the operator.

The traffic originates at SCHAEFER KALK’s site in Kerkerbach and is hauled primarily by a Siemens Mobility Vectron Dual Mode locomotive. The locomotive operates electrically on the main sections of the route, using diesel traction only on short non-electrified segments.

RheinCargo said the service is designed to continue during the planned “Generalsanierung rechter Rhein” infrastructure works scheduled to start in July 2026. During the works, the company plans to route the trains via left-bank Rhine lines or through the Lahn–Dill corridor to maintain supply to the Duisburg-Nord steelworks.
