Rail Cargo Group (RCG) and Captrain Italia have launched a new cross-border freight service for transporting industrial salt from Ebensee in Austria to Domodossola in Italy.

The operation is divided between the two operators: Rail Cargo Group manages the Austrian segment from Ebensee to Brennero, while Captrain Italia handles the Italian section from Brennero to Domodossola.

The service uses MOBILER containers, with a maximum payload of 28,900 kg. These containers have previously been deployed for bulk commodities such as recycled glass, ashes, clinker, saline slags, industrial salt and aluminium granulate. Their low loading height allows direct transfer between road and rail without cranes or sidings, supporting faster loading processes.

More road salt by rail using MOBILER technology

This new service expands the use of MOBILER technology on the Ebensee corridor. RCG already operates regular MOBILER-based transports from the same origin for road salt deliveries to the Port of Vienna. These trains supply large quantities of salt used for winter road maintenance. In that case, weekly shipments of around 500 tons per train are sent from Ebensee to Vienna’s Freudenau port, where the salt is stored before road distribution across the region.

Both routes use the same type of intermodal container system, linking different sectors: chemical industry supply chains and public infrastructure maintenance.
