A new cross-border rail service, dubbed the "Three-Country Train," started operations on Sunday, June 30, 2024. The service will connect the cities of Liège, Maastricht, Heerlen, and Aachen, offering direct travel between Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
This new service is designed to simplify travel within the Euregio region, eliminating the need for transfers at Maastricht and providing a more seamless journey for commuters, residents, and tourists. The launch event featured a symbolic key handover at Maastricht station, representing the cooperative effort among the rail operators involved.
The train service is part of a public transport concession operated by Arriva on behalf of the Province of Limburg (Netherlands) and go.Rheinland (Germany). For the Maastricht to Liège section, Arriva collaborates with NS (Netherlands) and SNCB (Belgium).
From summer 2024 the Three-Country Train (RE18) will offer continuous travel across the borders, connecting Aachen Hauptbahnhof, Heerlen, Maastricht, and Liège-Guillemins.
