The contract introduces a new origin-destination pair to the UK rail freight map, with trains currently operating at a frequency of once per week.

Freightliner has launched a new rail flow between Newport Docks and Radlett in Hertfordshire, transporting specialist aggregates for its customer Tarmac.

The traffic consists of high PSV (Polished Stone Value) material, intended for road resurfacing purposes. The high PSV rating indicates suitability for use in applications requiring better skid resistance, such as road surfaces subject to frequent braking.

The service benefits from Network Rail’s Track Access Discount Scheme, which provides a financial incentive for opening new freight flows by reducing access charges. This mechanism aims to support modal shift from road to rail, particularly for new or previously non-rail-served routes.
