The economic downturn in Germany and Europe continues to impact intermodal transport, with Kombiverkehr reporting a reduction in shipment volumes for 2024.

The Frankfurt-based operator transported approximately 780,000 containers, swap bodies, and semi-trailers over the year, equating to around 1.5 million TEU. This represents a decrease of about five percent compared to the previous year, with national shipments down by three percent to 180,000 and international shipments dropping by six percent to 600,000.

Infrastructure work affects operations

Rail freight volumes across national and international routes have been affected by economic conditions and infrastructure projects. Extensive construction on the German rail network, including the prolonged closure of the Riedbahn for corridor renovations, contributed to operational disruptions. The company reported train cancellations reaching 10 to 15 percent at times.

Infrastructure projects impacted several key corridors. The Rhine Valley route is currently closed, affecting services on the Rotterdam/Duisburg–Mortara corridor. International transport also faced challenges, with construction on the Tauern route between Salzburg and Villach causing reroutings. These works, while intended to improve the network in the long term, led to diversions, increased costs, and reduced service frequencies.

New connections and traction conversion

Despite operational constraints, Kombiverkehr introduced new services in 2024. A new Rotterdam–Cologne-Eifeltor route launched in March with three weekly round trips, followed by the Antwerp–Irun connection in September. From Irun, eight weekly connections to Madrid were introduced. Additionally, a Duisburg–Hallsberg service in Sweden was implemented at the turn of the year. In January 2025, Kombiverkehr reinstated a Lübeck–Verona route with two round trips per week, alongside an alternative connection to Verona via Hamburg, which operates three times a week.

Kombiverkehr also carried out a traction conversion project in response to EU proceedings against Germany. In mid-2024, the company transitioned a large portion of its transport operations to other rail transport companies (RUs). The reorganization, completed in February 2025, involved collaboration with multiple RUs and internal teams to ensure a smooth transition. The company strengthened cooperation with existing RUs and added new partnerships as part of the process.
