Leon is produced entirely in Romania by Electroputere VFU Pașcani. This is Romania’s first fully domestically manufactured DMU railcar in eight decades.
The "Leon" railcar has completed over 30,000 kilometers of test runs and holds a valid CE certification, permitting operation across European networks. The vehicle operates at a maximum speed of 120 km/h, driven by two 390 kW power-packs.
The manufacturer emphasizes reduced emissions and fuel efficiency, specifically targeting lines without electrification, which currently represent approximately 62% of Romania's railway network.
During the official inauguration, the DMU operated a demonstration service between Bucharest North and Bucharest Băneasa stations.
The production of the Leon railcar aligns with GRAMPET Group's broader objectives of increasing domestic manufacturing capabilities within the railway sector. The railcar’s introduction into regular service is expected shortly.
