Graz-Köflacher Bahn und Busbetrieb GmbH (GKB) will begin electric train operations on the S6 line of the Styrian S-Bahn starting 4 August 2025. Electric trains will initially run between Graz Central Station and Wies-Eibiswald, via Hengsberg and Wettmannstätten, using double-decker units equipped with air conditioning, step-free access, and modern passenger amenities. For now, services will maintain the current timetable, but GKB has announced that timetable changes on 14 December 2025 will bring expanded operations across several regional S-Bahn lines.
Koralmbahn changes the operations
From mid-December, the S6 line will be rerouted to run directly over the new Koralmbahn section between Wettmannstätten and Graz, bypassing local stops such as Werndorf, which will be removed from the route. New stops will be added at Weststeiermark station, and existing ones such as Groß St. Florian will be maintained. The S6 will operate hourly until midnight, with half-hourly frequency during peak periods.
New maintenance facilities, intentions to buy 28 EMUs
To support full electric rail operations, GKB has initiated the construction of new maintenance facilities. Until the infrastructure network is fully electrified, the company will continue operating diesel multiple units across sections still awaiting overhead wiring.
GKB is planning to procure 28 new electric multiple units to eventually replace diesel rolling stock across its entire regional network, with the aim of switching entirely to electric rail operations throughout western Styria.
The expansion of electric S-Bahn services is coordinated with the launch of the Koralmbahn corridor from Vienna to Carinthia, with GKB positioned as a key regional feeder to long-distance services.
