VIA Rail Canada has announced the arrival of its new fleet in Southwestern Ontario, part of a plan to upgrade the entire Québec City-Windsor corridor. This development is a significant overhaul in the region's passenger rail service, with the first of these new trains entering commercial service by summer 2024.

The transition to the new fleet provided by Siemens Mobility will be phased, with 63% of the trains expected to be operational by the end of 2024. The complete replacement of the old trains is set for summer 2025. These new trains promise a modern, accessible, and environmentally friendly alternative, aimed at improving travel for Canadians and tourists alike.

The new fleet features advanced designs with ergonomic seats, large adjustable tray tables, braille and raised display, and spacious, fully accessible washrooms. These upgrades aim to enhance the overall travel experience, providing greater comfort and convenience for passengers.

VIA Rail's President and CEO, Mario Péloquin, emphasized the focus on modernizing operations in Canada’s most densely populated corridor. He highlighted the benefits these changes will bring to travelers, ensuring a fully accessible travel experience throughout the region.

The introduction of the new trains is also seen as an opportunity for businesses to incorporate this mode of transport into their corporate travel policies, promoting a more sustainable choice to the car-dominated habits on Northern America. The improved train features are designed to support productivity and offer a comfortable travel environment, making it an attractive option for business travel.

In addition to the new trains, VIA Rail is also rolling out its strategic plan, VIAction 2030, aimed at raising awareness among decision-makers about the importance of sustainable travel choices. This initiative encourages businesses to adopt policies that support rail travel, aligning with broader environmental goals.
