Trenes Argentinos Cargas (TAC) has received the second shipment of 90 new grain hopper wagons at the Port of Buenos Aires, completing the delivery of 180 units ordered from CMEC.
Each unit is narrow-gauge and rated for a payload of 55 tonnes, translating into a total annual transport capacity increase of 400,000 tonnes across the grain route.
The rolling stock is expected to enter regular service in the coming weeks, forming part of four grain trains supported by locomotives. The Belgrano Line serves the agricultural interior of Argentina, running through the provinces of Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Córdoba, Chaco, Tucumán, Santiago del Estero, Salta, and Jujuy, with freight typically destined for the ports in the Greater Rosario area.
The purchase was financed through a prepayment agreement between TAC and grain exporters Cofco International, Viterra, and the Asociación de Cooperativas Argentinas (ACA). The agreement secured USD 22 million (approx. EUR 20.6 million) in freight prepayments to fund the acquisition.
In addition to the Belgrano Line, TAC also operates the Urquiza and San Martín lines, connecting agricultural and industrial regions to Argentina’s export hubs.
