A total of 41 of these new units are scheduled for delivery by 2026, with full deployment primarily targeting routes along the Vienna main line and connecting regions.

The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) presented its latest Cityjet double-decker train today in St. Pölten, marking an addition to its fleet intended to meet increasing passenger demand in local transport.

This upgrade comes as part of ÖBB's larger investment in regional rail capacity, with 109 new double-deckers to be deployed, representing a total expenditure of approximately 1.5 billion euros.

The modernization of ÖBB’s fleet responds to rising ridership, aiming to increase capacity in the eastern region, where two-thirds of Austria's local rail services operate. The introduction of these new double-decker units aligns with ÖBB's broader fleet expansion strategy, which includes the purchase of 330 new trains by 2030, with an allocated budget of 6.1 billion euros.

Designed for regional routes, the new Cityjet double-deckers will reach a maximum speed of 160 km/h and provide seating for up to 591 passengers in a six-car configuration. The trains are equipped to support diverse commuter needs, offering modern amenities such as barrier-free boarding, dedicated areas for bicycles and strollers, air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi.

Passenger convenience is further prioritized through features such as multiple toilets, including a barrier-free restroom with a changing table, video surveillance, and a designated wheelchair space equipped with adjustable sidewall tables. The multi-purpose areas within each car will accommodate up to 60 bicycles in the six-car configuration, offering flexibility for commuters and recreational travelers alike.

These new Cityjet double-decker trains are expected to support commuter flows on key routes from the northern regions of Austria to the central Vienna area and further south.
